Introduction

There are actually many possible careers that begin with teacher education. The purpose of this unit is to help you explore all your options as an education major as well as to develop the specific skill of understanding entrepreneurship.

Public and Private Sectors

Education-related jobs can be found in the public sector (any job having to do with government) as well as the private sector. Public sector jobs include teaching in public schools, but also teaching at the college level and working in the many governmental agencies having to do with education, such as local school districts, state departments of education, and the U.S. Department of Education. Private sector jobs may be non-profit (the purpose of the organization is to do something rather than to make money) and for profit (such as businesses). Private non-profit jobs include teaching in private schools and colleges and working in charitable or professional organizations. Education-related profit-making ventures include technology companies, textbook companies, testing companies, tutoring companies, and many other possibilities.

Your Career Possibilities

Public Sector/Private Email

Choose a governmental-type job to explore in depth. At what level is it (local, state, federal)? What are the educational requirements for this job? What experiences would you need in order to qualify for this job? What is the job description? How does this job description fit with your interests?

What other information would you need to know in order to decide whether you would like to pursue a job like this? For example, if you are a people person, you wouldn't want a job that isolates you or if you dislike team work, you wouldn't want a job that is totally dependent on teamwork. Find the email of someone who has this kind of job. Write a professional email requesting that the person respond to your questions and then write your questions. Remember that this person might be helpful to you, so make sure you are as polite and respectful as you can possibly be.

If you get a response, be sure to thank the person and also to continue the conversation if that is appropriate. Getting a job is a lot about who you know and this person could be an important professional contact.

Private Sector/Business Plan

Many people have decided to address educational needs by creating either private non-profit organizations or for-profit businesses. In order to develop your entrepreneurial skills, choose a business plan format from here:

The One Page business plan is just fine.

Now...think of an educational need that should be met. Design a for-profit business or non-profit organization to meet that need. You could design something very small (1-2 employees) or something very large (10,000 employees--dream big). The business plan template will guide you towards creating an idea.

Rubrics

Mind Map--has at least 50 different types of jobs on it.
Email--good grammar/spelling/punctuation, respectful tone, thoughtful questions
Business plan--evidence of thinking through an idea (e.g., details)
